Gormley's Concern Over Aer Lingus Plans

Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, has raised concern over the Aer Lingus decision to end its Shannon to Heathrow service.

Mr Gormley said the move was not in accordance with Government policy.

Yesterday, the Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, said the government should apply its shareholding in Aer Lingus to put a stop to the airline's plans.

Dermot Mannion, Chief Executive of Aer Lingus, will meet with politicians today to discuss the decision. He will be accompanied by Aer Lingus Chairman John Sharman.

Meanwhile, the planned strike by Aer Lingus pilots will go ahead after airline management refused their offer to call it off.

Aer Lingus rejected a proposal to halt its recruitment plans in Belfast and enter into talks, according to IMPACT trade union.

Michael Landers, IMPACT official, said: "The problem has been that the airline has refused to engage with us and has pushed ahead to establish a base in Belfast, with complete disregard to its obligations under collective agreements between the union and the company."

The dispute centres on the airline's opening of a new hub in Belfast. Aer Lingus advertised pilot jobs in Belfast at lower pay and with poorer terms and conditions than those of pilots based in Dublin and Cork.

The strike is planned for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
