'One In Ten' Motorists Drink And Drive
One in ten Irish motorists admits to drinking and driving, a new nationwide survey has found.
The survey conducted on behalf of the Irish Insurance Federation, also found that nearly 60% admitted to breaking the speed limit.
One in five admitted to texting while driving, while an even higher number (40%) admitted to talking on their mobile phone while behind the wheel.
A fifth of those questioned also said that they did not bother to wear seat belts.
Young men were found to be the most likely to admit to breaking road safety rules, particularly speeding.
The survey of 900 motorists, suggested that losing your licence, fines and penalty points were the best punishments to deter people from breaching road safety laws.
However, the Irish Insurance Federation said that more needed to be done to promote road safety and said that more resources needed to be given to the Garda's traffic branch.

Truckers Withdraw Threats Of Further Protests
Truckers from the Irish Road Haulage Association has withdrawn threats of further protests. The Department of Transport has agreed for a meeting with Minister Noonan, Minister Donohoe and Minister Kelly to reach a satisfactory solution to the current HGV road tax issue. A date for a meeting is to be confirmed.

Minister Humphreys will attend a number of meetings during her visit, including Fiona Hyslop MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs.

Irish Guardsman Dies In Afghan Firefight
The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

Russian Espionage Scandal Used Irish Passports
It has emerged that at least one false Irish passport was used by a Russian spy ring allegedly operating in the US. The passport is said to have been passed to a Richard Murphy, who is among 11 people currently under trail in Manhattan Federal court, charged with being a Russian spy.
