Uisce Éireann has imposed a Boil Water Notice on the Deelish Public Water Supply from 24 September 2026 after a deterioration in raw water quality affected treatment at the local plant. Around 440 customers in Deelish, Kilnafrehan, Kilgobnet and Garranbane and surrounding areas must boil water for drinking, preparing food and brushing teeth until further notice.

The measure, introduced in consultation with the Health Service Executive (HSE), is a public health precaution. Uisce Éireann says its teams are working to stabilise treatment processes and lift the notice as quickly and safely as possible, again in consultation with the HSE.

Customers can check if their property is included by entering their Eircode in the Water Quality section of water.ie or by phoning Uisce Éireann's customer care team on 1800 278 278, available 24/7. A map of the affected area is also available in the Supply and Service section of water.ie.

Maura Phealan of Uisce Éireann said: "We know how important a safe and reliable water supply is to everyday life and we understand the inconvenience this notice will cause for customers, families, businesses and community groups across the area.

"Protecting public health is always our top priority. As soon as our monitoring identified issues affecting water quality, we acted immediately in consultation with the HSE to put this notice in place as a safety measure. "Our teams are doing everything possible to resolve the issue and restore normal water quality as quickly as possible. We would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out."

Uisce Éireann notes that its drinking water standards are among the strictest in Europe and include significant safety margins. Where potential risks are identified through its testing and monitoring programme, the HSE is consulted and precautionary notices may be issued to safeguard public health.

Water is safe to consume once it has been boiled and allowed to cool. It must be boiled for drinking; preparing drinks; washing salads and other foods that will not be cooked; brushing teeth; and making ice.

Guidance for customers includes bringing water to a vigorous rolling boil and allowing it to cool before use; using boiled water to wash uncooked foods; and continuing to use tap water for washing, bathing and flushing toilets, but not for brushing teeth or gargling. Domestic water filters will not make tap water safe to drink.

Extra care should be taken when bathing children to ensure they do not swallow water. Great care is also advised when handling boiled water to avoid burns and scalds.
