Work is commencing on a substantial upgrade of the village's wastewater treatment plant, an investment Uisce Éireann says will enhance services, protect the local environment and enable future growth and development.

The scheme will lift the plant's population equivalent from 1,000 to 1,500, a 50% increase. It will also deliver key infrastructure to safeguard the environment and ensure compliance with Irish and EU legislation.

Planned works include modernising on-site treatment processes, installing new inlet works and a new storm water management system, upgrading the existing control building with a rainwater harvesting system and solar panels for on-site energy generation, and decommissioning the septic tank serving the Poll an Choire estate. Angus Hall, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager, said: "We can now forge ahead with the upgrade of wastewater infrastructure in Kilsheelan to unlock much needed growth and development. This upgrade will provide a more efficient and sustainable treatment of wastewater while increasing capacity by 50%. This project will play a key role in protecting the local environment, including the River Suir, and support the area's future growth and development."

The project will be delivered by Murphy International Limited on behalf of Uisce Éireann, with completion expected by early 2028.

The Kilsheelan upgrade is part of Uisce Éireann's ongoing multimillion-euro investment in wastewater infrastructure across County Tipperary, with projects recently completed in Newport, Ballina and Cahir, and upgrades under way in Fethard, Nenagh and Grangemockler.

Uisce Éireann, which provides public drinking water and wastewater services across Ireland, continues to invest in critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth, provide safe drinking water and enhance the environment.
