Sinn Féin's spokesperson on Public Expenditure, Mairéad Farrell TD, has said Luxembourg's decision not to facilitate the Israel War Bond for the year ahead would see responsibility revert to Ireland on 1 September. She urged the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance, Simon Harris, to intervene if the Central Bank does not act in line with international law, insisting Ireland should not be involved in the scheme.

Teachta Farrell said: "We now know that two months ago the Luxembourg regulator rejected the request made by the Irish Central Bank on behalf of Israel to facilitate the sale of war bonds across the EU. "Because of that refusal, the role defaults back to Ireland. It is deeply concerning that both the Tánaiste and the Central Bank refused to provide this information when I put questions to them on this issue.

"Last week, the Finance Minister and the Regulator in Luxembourg answered questions in an open and transparent manner in complete contrast to what we have seen here.

"They made it clear that Luxembourg will play no further part in facilitating Israeli War Bonds and that this was communicated to the Irish Central Bank.

"The clock is now ticking as Israel will need approval before the end of August if they are to continue to market their war bonds across the EU. It looks increasingly likely that Ireland will be the only option as other countries want no part in facilitating these war bonds.

"If the Irish Central Bank is unwilling to follow international law, then the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris need to stop making excuses and act to make sure Ireland has no part in facilitating genocide."
