The Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed that visitors under the age of 18 will enjoy free admission to OPW heritage sites nationwide for the entire month of August 2026. The move is intended to make cultural experiences more accessible for families and to encourage young people to explore Ireland's history, architecture and traditions.

Speaking about the initiative, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Kevin "Boxer" Moran, said: "I am delighted that all under 18s will once again enjoy free entry to OPW heritage sites this August. Whether it's exploring ancient monuments, visiting historic houses, taking part in interactive tours or discovering Ireland's cultural heritage first-hand, this initiative offers young people a fun and memorable way to connect with history, nature and culture over the summer holidays."

The U18 free-entry programme offers a wide range of experiences across the country. At Castletown House, children and teenagers can tour one of Ireland's grandest historic homes and enjoy a lively summer programme of music, exhibitions and cultural events.

At Glebe Gallery, young visitors can learn the stories behind one of Ireland's most striking regency houses, where newly conserved spaces blend heritage, art and hands-on experiences. Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery invites families to delve into the mysteries of Ireland's earliest megalithic tombs, with immersive displays and storytelling that animate prehistoric life.

Barryscourt Castle gives a window into life in a 15th-century stronghold, with access to restored halls, gardens and the fabric of a medieval tower house.

At Emo Court, younger visitors can take in the elegance of one of Ireland's finest neo-classical mansions before exploring woodland walks, lakeside trails and carefully tended gardens.

Céide Fields offers a journey back almost 6,000 years to the world's oldest known stone-walled fields, set against dramatic Atlantic scenery and supported by engaging exhibitions.

A trip to Ilnacullin - Garinish Island combines a scenic boat crossing with the chance to wander celebrated island gardens, known for rare plants, beautiful vistas and rich wildlife.

Families can plan day trips, longer breaks or themed routes using itineraries available from Heritage Ireland. Advance online booking is available for a number of OPW sites.

All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The current Free U12 scheme is being extended to a Free U18 scheme from 1 to 31 August only.
