Amazon Pulls E-Scooter From Sale In Ireland As Murphy Urges Wider Retail Action
A Fine Gael TD has urged all sellers to follow Amazon's example and halt sales of any e-scooters that do not comply with Irish law.
Deputy Michael Murphy confirmed he was told by Amazon over the weekend that it had stopped selling the e-scooter model he flagged earlier in the week for failing to meet Irish legislation.
Murphy, who chairs the Oireachtas Transport Committee, said the online platform informed him the electric foldable e-scooter was taken down and that an investigation is now under way at the company.
He said retailers must take responsibility for how they market and sell e-scooters, calling for the removal of any products aimed at children or capable of exceeding legal speed limits from websites and shop floors.
"A child's health and a person's well being is far more important than any business profit margin," the Tipperary Fine Gael TD said.
"I commend Amazon for the quick action taken. It displays responsibility and transparency from a business.
"I now call on all other retailers to follow suit and pull these e-scooters from being sold in their shops and online. Some of these are specifically marketed at children as young as six-years-old," Deputy Murphy said.
In addition to Amazon's move, Murphy said AliExpress has also stopped selling an e-scooter he highlighted on Thursday, and it is now no longer available in Ireland.
"Two retailers have since taken action. But it isn't enough," he said.
"Others need to front up now and put people's safety and the well-being of children first and pull the sale of these products[2]. Anything less is unacceptable," he said.
"Other e-scooters are claimed to reach top speeds of 45km/h[3]."
Under Irish rules, e-scooter users must be at least 16 years old, and devices used on public roads cannot exceed a design speed of 20 km/h.
Children's Health Ireland has reported a 50% rise in admissions of children and young people with traumatic brain injuries linked to e-scooter incidents.
Murphy added that he is awaiting the outcome of a meeting next week between Tánaiste Simon Harris, the Taoiseach, relevant Ministers and the Garda Commissioner on the issue of e-scooters.

Gardaí Appeal for Information Following Shooting Incident in Limerick
Gardaí have launched an investigation into all the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a firearm at a residence on Hyde Avenue in Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, on the afternoon of Sunday 19th July 2026. Emergency services alongside Gardaí arrived at the scene following reports of the incident, which occurred at approximately 4:30pm.
