Dáil Passes Jennie's Law Establishing Domestic Violence Judgments Register
The Dáil has passed the Domestic Violence Judgments Register Bill 2026, known as Jennie's Law, marking a significant step in the development of measures aimed at tackling domestic violence.
The legislation, which was approved by TDs on Thursday evening, follows a long-running campaign led by domestic violence campaigner Jason Poole, whose sister Jennifer Poole is commemorated in the name of the Bill.
Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin North West Paul McAuliffe welcomed the Bill's passage and paid tribute to those involved in bringing the legislation before the Oireachtas.
Speaking following the passage of Jennie's Law in the Dáil, Deputy McAuliffe said: "I commend the Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, my colleague Senator Fiona O’Loughlin and most importantly Jason Poole, Jennifer’s brother and family who have been working tirelessly over the past number of years to ensure that Jennie’s Law is progressed and brought into law. "The passing of Jennie’s Law through the Dáil is a culmination of years of hard work, advocacy and determination by all on this campaign. Jennifer Poole was a mother of two, a healthcare worker at Beneavin Lodge Care Home, and played camogie with Erin's Isle. The Bill will be known as Jennie’s Law in memory of Jennifer.
"This law will be transformative in helping people across Ireland, who are in a relationship, to discover whether their partner had a history of serious domestic violence convictions.
"In her life, as a mother, a care worker, a club member, Jennifer Poole gave so much to our community, she stood for everything that is positive about our community. It is fitting that even after this tragedy she and her family have inspired this community to pass Jennie’s Law and to save lives in this country.
"I would echo the Minister's point that a register alone is not a solution. It has to sit alongside the wider strategy - continued funding for victim support organisations, awareness raising, and work on the root causes of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and I will support these initiatives where possible."
Jennie's Law establishes a Domestic Violence Judgments Register, intended to allow people in a relationship to find out whether their partner has a history of serious domestic violence convictions. The legislation was introduced following years of campaigning by Jennifer Poole's family, who have argued that greater access to information could help protect potential victims and prevent future abuse.
