Minister for Older People Issues Urgent Advice to Stay Safe During Heatwave
The Minister for Older People, Kieran O'Donnell TD, has advised older people across the country to avoid direct sunlight and maintain proper hydration to stay safe during the current period of hot weather in Ireland.
Reflecting on the recent weather warnings issued by Met Éireann, the Minister cautioned: "Ireland is experiencing a week of very high temperatures. Heat stress, heat exhaustion and heatstroke can have potentially serious health consequences for people during a heatwave.
"I would urge older people, and those caring for someone, to take precautions to protect themselves such as staying cool and hydrated, and to be on alert for signs of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
"It is important to remember that your GP or pharmacist will be able to advise you if any of your medicines might make you more likely to become ill from the heat."
Guidance published by the Department of Health under its 'Be Summer Ready' campaign highlights that older people are particularly vulnerable during intervals of extreme heat. Public health officials emphasise that taking straightforward steps can significantly protect personal health.
The Department has recommended the following practical advice for vulnerable individuals:
• Stay cool: Spend time in the coolest rooms of your home. Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to block out the sun, and open windows at night when the outdoor air is cooler. • Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you do not feel actively thirsty. Avoid alcohol and limit drinks containing high levels of caffeine.
• Avoid the heat of the day: Limit time spent outdoors, particularly during peak hours between 11am and 3pm, and remain in the shade where possible. Regularly and liberally apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30+ for adults.
• Dress appropriately: Wear light, loose‑fitting clothing and a wide‑brimmed hat when venturing outside.
• Keep your body cool: Take cool showers or place a damp cloth on your skin to effectively reduce your overall body temperature.
• Look out for signs of illness: Watch for symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, or confusion, which can indicate the onset of heat exhaustion. Seek professional medical advice if you begin to feel unwell.
• Stay connected: Keep in frequent touch with family members, friends, or neighbours, and do not hesitate to ask for help if it is required.
Early intervention is vital if an individual becomes unwell due to heat exhaustion, heatstroke, or severe dehydration. Members of the public are advised to contact their GP or seek medical attention immediately if they become dizzy, disorientated, experience a lack of urination, or notice an increased heart rate.
Emergency Note: In the event of a medical emergency, contact the emergency services immediately by calling 112 or 999.
