Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland And RNLI Urge Water Caution
Ahead of the June Bank Holiday weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI are urging anyone planning activities on or near the water to take extra care.
Although the air may feel warm, sea and inland water temperatures are still low. Even on sunny days, many waters remain below 15°C — cold enough to trigger cold‑water shock and, in turn, hypothermia. The body's sudden reaction can cause involuntary gasping, panic and loss of breathing control, which greatly raises the risk of drowning.
With large numbers expected at the coast and on inland waterways — and for many, a first dip of the season — enter the water slowly, splash yourself to acclimatise, keep dips brief and stay within your depth. Do not go alone; swim with others, stay together and make sure everyone exits the water safely. If you are heading out, check the weather and tides in advance and carry a way to call for help, such as a fully charged mobile phone. Always wear a properly fitted and serviced lifejacket or buoyancy aid. Avoid alcohol, which impairs judgement, coordination and reaction time, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
If you fall in unexpectedly or get into difficulty, remember Float to Live: stay calm and resist the urge to panic or thrash around; tilt your head back with your ears submerged; relax and try to breathe normally; use your hands and feet to help you stay afloat — it is fine if your legs sink, as we all float differently. Once you have regained control of your breathing, call for help, raise a hand or swim to safety if you can.
If you see someone in trouble on the water or along the coast, or suspect they are in difficulty, use marine VHF radio Channel 16 or dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
