Agencies Issue Water Safety Warning For June Bank Holiday
The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI have issued joint advice asking the public to stay safe and to be mindful of the dangers posed by cold water, whether swimming or taking part in activities afloat.
Although the air may feel warm, sea and inland water temperatures around Ireland are still low. Entering or unexpectedly falling into cold water can quickly lead to cold shock and hypothermia.
Even on sunny days, water is often below 15°C — cold enough to trigger cold water shock. This sudden response can cause involuntary gasping, panic and loss of breathing control, which significantly increases the risk of drowning. With many people expected at the coast and on inland waterways — and for some, taking their first dip of the year — enter the water slowly, splash yourself to acclimatise, keep swims short and stay within your depth. Swim in groups, remain together and ensure everyone gets out safely.
If you are planning time in or on the water, check the weather and tides beforehand and carry a way to call for help. Always wear a correctly fitting, serviced lifejacket or buoyancy aid. Avoid alcohol, which impairs judgement, coordination and reaction time, and let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.
If you fall in or get into difficulty, follow Float to Live: stay calm and resist the urge to panic, tilt your head back so your ears are submerged, relax and control your breathing, and use gentle movements of your hands and legs to stay afloat. Then signal for help by raising a hand or, if able, swim to safety.
If you see someone in trouble on the water or along the coast, or think they may be in difficulty, use marine VHF Channel 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
