'Make the Right Memories' Summer Travel Campaign Launched
To mark the European Day of Safe Travel Abroad, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee TD, has officially launched the government's Summer 2026 overseas travel campaign.
The initiative encourages Irish citizens heading abroad this summer to remain informed, stay prepared, and consult Ireland.ie/TravelWise for the Department's latest official travel advice and guidelines.
Minister McEntee commented: "While travelling abroad is undoubtedly both fulfilling and exciting, it is not entirely without risks. Unexpected medical emergencies, lost passports or flight disruptions can mean that even the best-laid plans are subject to change.
"This information and awareness campaign is aimed at all Irish citizens, but particularly at young people who might be travelling overseas independently for the first time, some of whom may be celebrating the end of exams, an important life milestone."
The launch arrives after five consecutive years of rising consular cases, alongside growing global instability and changing travel environments. Consequently, this year's campaign is being introduced during a period of heightened risk for travel disruptions that could impact citizens travelling, working, or living abroad. The Minister emphasised several straightforward yet effective measures that holidaymakers can complete before departing, which include:
• Research local laws, culture and customs on Ireland.ie/TravelWise ahead of departure;
• Check your passport's validity and, if needed, renew it well ahead of travel;
• Keep digital copies of ID and travel documents to hand;
• Prepare for different weather conditions;
• Bring your EHIC if travelling within Europe, and always remember to have comprehensive travel insurance.
Addressing young travellers specifically, Minister McEntee stressed: "This summer, look after your friends, be mindful of your surroundings, watch your drinks, and swim only where and when it is safe. Share your location on nights out and stay connected with friends and family back home. By being aware and looking out for yourselves and your friends, you can ensure that you Make the Right Memories."
Though most international trips occur without incident, a global network of over 100 Irish Embassies and Consulates—spanning more than 200 countries and territories—stands ready to help citizens who encounter difficulties abroad, supported by a 24-hour consular assistance team based in Dublin.
The Minister concluded: "Wherever your travels take you this summer, be it a first family holiday, solo trip, J1 adventure, or time away with friends, stay safe, enjoy yourself, and Make the Right Memories."
