New Diaspora Strategy 2026-2030 Launched in New York
Neale Richmond TD, the Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora, has officially launched the Irish government's new Diaspora Strategy 2026-2030 during a visit to Ireland House in New York.
This third iteration of Ireland's diaspora strategy serves as a comprehensive roadmap for the next chapter of engagement between Ireland and its global community. The document is the product of an extensive consultation process—the largest ever undertaken—which featured 27 in-person meetings, including five sessions held in the United States. It also incorporated data from the inaugural Global Irish Survey, a digital consultation conducted during the summer of 2025.
Speaking at the New York launch, Minister Richmond said: "Our new strategy is the culmination of thousands of conversations around the world, including a high level of engagement with the Irish in the US. It was fitting to launch the strategy in New York, a city with deep Irish roots. The government remains committed to engaging with and supporting Irish people overseas. I look forward to meeting with many of our Irish community partners in New York and Washington DC throughout this week." Reflecting on the evolving demographics of the Irish population in America, the Minister noted the complex environment in which many US-based Irish centres now operate. He emphasised a continued commitment to working with partner organisations to ensure support for the most vulnerable community members.
Addressing the need to reach younger demographics, the Minister remarked: "With emigration patterns shifting, it is vital that we adapt our engagement with younger generations. Whether newly arrived Irish citizens, or 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation diaspora, the next generation of leaders will be central in sustaining vibrant communities and maintaining the connection to Ireland in the years ahead."
A primary objective of the new strategy is to leverage the diaspora's desire to assist Ireland in its diplomatic and trade goals. The Minister noted: "In my conversations across the world, I witnessed the appetite among the diaspora to help Ireland in advancing our trade and diplomatic agenda. We will invest further in these vital relationships and harness the invaluable connections, expertise and insights that have been offered to us."
Additionally, the strategy aims to simplify the process for those looking to move back to Ireland.
The Minister added: "We also recognise the administrative hurdles people may face when they wish to return to Ireland and we remain committed to providing clear, accurate and accessible information to reduce the barriers some may face."
