Eight Emerging Artists Awarded Inaugural Luke Kelly Bursary

Dublin City Council has officially named the eight recipients of the first-ever Luke Kelly Bursary, an initiative established to foster emerging voices within Irish folk music. Although the programme was originally intended to fund six artists, the council chose to expand the cohort to eight due to the exceptionally high standard of nationwide applications.

The bursary winners represent a broad spectrum of talent, ranging from young students to established performers in their 20s and 30s. The youngest recipients are 10-year-old Johnny Joyce from Mullingar and 13-year-old Julia McCarthy Dillon from Portarlington Comhaltas, alongside 19-year-old Daniel Doherty from Ashbourne.

Further recipients include Finglas musician Jack Nico, Wicklow-based Jacqui Ní Fhaoláin, Christina Collins from West Cork, Marino primary school teacher Aoife Maguire, and David Harris from Blessington. Each artist was selected for their commitment to the storytelling, authenticity, and social awareness that defined Luke Kelly's musical legacy.

Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, commented: "I warmly congratulate each of the eight inaugural Dublin City Council Luke Kelly Bursary recipients. They should be very proud of what they have achieved. To be selected from such a strong field is a real mark of their talent, their promise and their commitment to the great Irish folk tradition. This year, my theme as Lord Mayor is Celebrating Dublin. That means celebrating Dubliners who have shaped our city, lifted our spirits and carried our stories far beyond our shores. Luke Kelly did that in a way few others ever have. His voice, his music and his social conscience remain part of the soul of Dublin. But celebrating Dublin also means celebrating the next generation."

The selection was made by a judging panel including Leagues O'Toole and the Foggy Notions team, Paula McCann representing the Luke Kelly family, and representatives from Dublin City Council.

Each recipient receives a €1,000 bursary. In addition to the financial support, the artists recently participated in a mentorship programme with acclaimed musician George Murphy at Troubadour Studios. They are also provided with a high-profile performance platform at the Dublin City Council Luke Kelly Festival, held in Smithfield Square on 23 and 24 May.

The festival features a free public programme of discussions, cultural events, and live music. Further details regarding the event schedule can be found at www.Dublin.ie/lukekelly.
