Community Gardens Flourish Across Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown For Climate Action Week
As part of Dublin Climate Action Week, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council is spotlighting a busy line-up of community garden open days and workshops across the county, showing climate action on the ground and inviting people of all ages to get involved. Visitors can explore local gardens, join free talks and hands-on sessions, and learn practical tips on rainwater harvesting, composting, container growing and gardening on a budget. The programme highlights how community gardens support biodiversity, sustainable food production, climate awareness and community wellbeing.
Speaking about the programme, Cllr Jim Gildea, Cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, said: "Dublin Climate Action Week is a wonderful opportunity to see climate action delivered locally. Our community gardens show how local initiatives can deliver real benefits for biodiversity, sustainability and social connection. I encourage people across the county to attend these open days and see this work firsthand." Frank Curran, Chief Executive of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, added: "These community garden open days demonstrate that climate action can be practical, inclusive and rooted in local communities. Through Dublin Climate Action Week, we are supporting residents to build skills, share knowledge and take positive climate action together."
Wednesday 13 May: Rockfield Community Garden Open Day – Rainwater Harvesting with Local Authority Waters Programme (10:00am–12:00pm); Wedgewood Edible Estate – Walk and Talk with Éanna Ní Lamhna (2:00pm–4:00pm).
Thursday 14 May: Shanganagh Community Garden Open Day – Wildlife Ponds for Biodiversity (10:00am–12:00pm); Airfield Community Garden Open Day – Container Gardening for Small Spaces (2:00pm–4:00pm).
Friday 15 May: Sandyford Downs Community Garden – Composting for Soil Health (2:00pm–4:00pm).
Saturday 16 May: Sallynoggin Community Garden – Gardening for All Ages (10:30am–12:30pm); Fernhill Community Garden – Gardening on a Budget (1:00pm–3:00pm).
