Taoiseach Congratulates Péter Magyar On Hungarian Election Victory
Taoiseach Micheál Martin has congratulated Péter Magyar and his Tisza party on winning Hungary’s parliamentary elections, praising the strong participation of voters.
He said he looks forward to working with the Prime Minister-elect to strengthen relations between Ireland and Hungary, grounded in their shared membership of the European Union and commitment to common values. Martin also noted that Ireland held the EU Presidency when Hungary joined the Union in May 2004, and that Ireland is preparing for a new Presidency term in July. As the two countries mark 50 years of diplomatic relations, the Government aims to reinforce bilateral links with the incoming administration in Budapest.

Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds Dies Aged 81
Former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds has died aged 81. Reynolds, born in Rooskey, Co Roscommon, served as a minister in a number of governmental departments and was elected Taoiseach on two occasions. He has been honoured as playing an integral role in the Northern Ireland peace process. His death was announced by his eldest son, Philip Reynolds.

Labour Party Leader Brendan Howlin has called for an explanation as to why the last minute visit by the Taoiseach to Hungarian leader Victor Orbán was kept secret until now. Deputy Howlin is also keen to find out why the Dáil wasn't informed of the visit on 13 December in response to a Parliamentary Question.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has met with French President, Francois Hollande, to discuss a range of EU counter-terrorism measures and the impact of the UK's Brexit decision. During the meeting the Taoiseach reiterated the sympathy and solidarity of the Irish people with France in the wake of the attack in Nice on 14 July.

Nurses Vote 'No Confidence' In Hospital Chiefs
Protesting nurses at Portiuncula Hospital in Galway have passed a vote of no confidence in their Director of Nursing and General Manager. Nurses working in the Ballinasloe hospital cast their vote at a general meeting this week, over the handling of an ongoing dispute within senior nurse management at the hospital.
