Man Arrested In Connection With Alleged Sexual Offences In Scouting Ireland

A man, aged in his 70s, has been arrested by garda investigating alleged sexual offences committed by an individual associated with Scouting Ireland.

To date, An Garda Síochána has carried out a lengthy investigation into these matters.

As part of the investigation Gardaí from the Protective Services Unit in Cork city, with the assistance of local Gardaí, carried out four searches at properties in Co Cork and one in Co Kerry. During the searches Gardaí seized documentation, electronic devices and computers.

An Garda Síochána is continuing to liaise with the review group and Tusla in relation to these matters and thanks them for their assistance to date.

Each and every complaint made to An Garda Síochána will be investigated with professionalism and compassion. An Garda Síochána is appealing to any victim(s) who have not yet come forward to make a complaint at their local Garda station or via the confidential historical abuse phone line at 1800 555 222.

The man is currently detained at Togeher Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Public Trust In Garda At Record High
Some 80% of respondents to the Garda Public Attitudes Survey have said that they are "satisfied" with their local garda service. The survey also found that 76% of respondents agreed that Gardaí in their area can be relied upon to be there when you need them, and 81% said that the Gardaí in their area listen to the concerns of local people.

Justice And Equality Budget To Increase By €85m

Taoiseach Makes Garda Commitments Following O'Higgins Report Publication
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has committed to increase garda numbers to 15,000, double the number of garda reserve officers and increase the number of civilian workers in An Garda Síochána to free up officers for frontline policing. 100 New Recruits To Enter Garda College
One hundred new recruits are to enter Garda College, the Minister for Justice and Equity Frances Fitzgerald has announced. Training will commence in September this year at the Templemore facility, and marks the first new garda recruits to be recruited in five years.
