Armed Support Unit Deployed In Cavan-Monaghan

A new gardaí armed support unit has been established to patrol border region in Cavan-Monaghan.

The new unit is to be based in Cavan, and will complement the two other border-based armed units in Dundalk and Donegal.

The new unit will be staffed by gardaí taken from other armed support units until new members are fully trained to operate it.

The Garda Representative Association welcomed the deployment, but said that it is proof that the necessary resources have not been provided for the border region.

It said the deployment is necessary not only in the event of Brexit but also because of the increase in cross-border criminality and dissident activity.
