WorldSkills Team Return After Russian Success

The Irish WorldSkills team have been congratulated on their success as they arrived home from Russia this week.

The team, made up of 17 young apprentices, trainees and students, achieved 10th place overall at the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia.

They took home four gold medals, one bronze medal, a Best of Nation medal and seven Medallions for Excellence.

Minister for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development John Halligan T.D. offered his congratulations to the competitors after the results were officially announced on Tuesday.

In Kazan to lend his support, Minister Halligan said: "In itself it is such an incredible achievement to have competed at Worldskills but to be able to also bring home medals, really highlights this team's individual dedication and commitment to their crafts. It also bodes well for their future, and no doubt successful careers but also Ireland's future."

Team Ireland members competed against the clock over the course of the four-day event, under the watchful eyes of their peers, their fellow competitors from over 60 countries and the public. The competitors took part in a diverse range of skills competitions from the craft areas such as Plumbing & Heating and Construction Metal Work as well as newer areas such as Cloud Computing and Building Information Modelling.

The Irish team of competitors come from Donegal, Waterford, Cavan, Kerry, Wexford, Offaly, Kildare, Galway, Longford, Dublin, Limerick, Roscommon, Kilkenny and Cork. The team trained in TU Dublin, institutes of technology (CIT, LIT, WIT, DKIT, IT Carlow & AIT) and education and training board colleges (Kerry ETB, Waterford Wexford ETB, Limerick Clare ETB, Donegal ETB, Dublin Dún Laoghaire ETB) and Shannon College of Hotel Management. Having the support from their employers and training providers really enabled and encouraged these competitors to showcase their talents on such a huge international stage.

Body Of Missing Teenager Recovered From River Shannon
The body of missing 19-year-old student Mark Casey has been recovered from the River Shannon at the Canal Bank area in Limerick. Members of the Limerick Search and Rescue team found the body of Mr Casey, who had been missing since 07 March.

Grenade Found At House In Galway
More than 30 families were evacuated from their homesi n Galway last night after a device was found in the garden of a house. A viable World War II grenade was discovered at a property at approximately 10.30pm. An army disposal team made the device safe at around 1.30am.

Gardaí Called To Hoax Device
Gardaí have uncovered a hoax device at a residence in Dublin. They were called to the scene at approximately 9.15pm on Thursday night after reports there was a bomb at a house on Kildare Road, Dublin 12. Gardaí soon identified a suspected pipe bomb beside a car in the area. The area was sealed off and houses were evacuated.

Rescue Team Recover Body Of Lost Hiker
A mountain rescue team has recovered the body of the hiker who had gone missing on a Connemara mountain. The 59-year-old hiker's body could not be recovered for almost 24 hours because of the inaccessibility of the location where he had fallen at the weekend.

Team Rescues Wicklow Mountains Adventurers
A number of people have been rescued from the Wicklow Mountains after getting stranded in the extreme weather. Rescuers located two stricken Dutch tourists, and brought them down from the Killakee Mountain in the early hours of this morning.
