Elderly Man Critical Following Dublin Assault

An elderly man who was assaulted in Dublin over the weekend remains in critical condition in hospital.

The victim, aged in his 70s, was attacked near the Courtney Place flats in Ballybough in the early hours of Saturday morning, 17 August.

He suffered head and spinal injuries and was transferred to the Mater Hospital where his condition is described as critical but stable.

A man in his 50s was arrested and questioned at Mountjoy Garda Station later on Saturday afternoon. He was released without charge on Sunday, while a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information relevant to the attack, to contact Mountjoy station.

Man Seriously Assaulted In Galway
Gardai have launched an investigation after a man was seriously assaulted in Galway on Sunday. The attack, between a number of youths, happened outside a fast food outlet on Shop Street at around 3.30am. The victim sustained a serious head injury and is believed to be in a critical condition at the University Hospital Galway.

An investigation has been launched into a house fire in Co Westmeath that has left a man in critical condition in hospital. It is understood that emergency services were called to a fire at a house in Battery Heights in Athlone at about 20:30 on Tuesday.

Man Remains In Critical Condition After Robbery
A shop worker remains in a critical condition in hospital following an armed robbery in Dublin at the weekend. A man in his 30s entered a Spar shop on James Street on Saturday night and threatened two members of staff with a syringe. After a struggle, a man was arrested at the scene. He has been remanded in custody.
