Counterfeit Goods Seized At Dublin Football Match

A planned operation during a football game in Dublin found the majority of vendors to be selling counterfeit goods.

17 out of 21 inspected vendors in the Dublin 4 area during Manchester United v Sampdoria, on Wednesday 2 August, were discovered to be trading fraudulent merchandise with an estimated street value of €25,000 by Gardai from the Intellectual Property Crime Unit.

The investigation was assisted by Gardai from DMR South Central Division, Officers from Revenue Customs Service, Dublin City Council Trading Licence Inspectors and representatives from Manchester United and Adidas.

In total, approximately 225 hats, 200 placards, 140 flags and 2,220 scarves were seized.

Detective Superintendent George Kyne said: "The ongoing co-operation between various elements of law enforcement will continue, the objective being to stop counterfeit and sub standard products affecting the trade of genuine branded products. We will also continue to work with industry to ensure their intellectual property rights are protected in this regard."

Counterfeit Toys Seized At Dublin Port
Customs officers have seized counterfeit toys worth an estimated €600,000 at Dublin Port. It is understood that officers from Revenue's Customs Service uncovered a consignment of around 20,000 toys originating from China. The toys are understood to be based on popular children's film characters.

Selfridges Acquires Arnotts For Undisclosed Sum
Retailer Selfridges has bought Dublin department store Arnotts for an undisclosed sum. Wittington Propertys and Selfridges are controlled by Brown Thomas owners, the Weston family. The union SIPTU has welcomed the announcement.

Major Dublin Hospital Takes €12m Overdraft
Tallaght Hospital has had to get a bank overdraft of €12m in order to continue treating patients for the rest of the year. The major Dublin hospital is getting the money from Allied Irish Banks to carry on after over-spending by more than €10m so far this year.

United Legends Win Penalty Shootout In Liam Miller Tribute Match
The Manchester United Legends team have beaten a combined Celtic/Republic of Ireland side in tribute match to the late Liam Miller. The United Legends were victorious in a penalty shootout when the score finished 2-2 after 90 minutes. The match took place in Liam's hometown of Cork at GAA stadium Pairc Ui Chaoimh.
