Irish Driving Disqualifications To Be Recognised Across The UK
A new provision will facilitate the mutual recognition of driving disqualifications between Ireland and the UK, the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, has announced.
Minister Ross said: "The mutual recognition of driving disqualifications is an important road safety measure because it aims to target dangerous drivers on our roads. The disqualifications relate to drivers disqualified for reckless or dangerous driving, hit and run driving, and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
"Mutual recognition of driving disqualifications is an important road safety measure for both Ireland and the UK, and is one of a series of measures I am introducing which will reduce road injuries and ultimately save lives.
"Maintaining the common travel area and our economic links with the UK are important priorities for Ireland, and this Agreement will make a contribution towards that objective, as well as making an important contribution to road safety."
The new measures are underpinned by an International Agreement between Ireland and the UK and primary legislative provisions in Ireland and the UK, both of which comes into effect today, Tuesday 01 August.
Under the Ireland / UK Agreement, the driving disqualification is, in effect, transferred by the State which imposes it to the licence of the offender's 'home' State. So, the legal consequence of the offence committed follows the offender home.

Fraud offences saw the biggest increase in the year to June 2019, according to the latest Central Statistics Office (CSO) Recorded Crime report. According to the report, the number of fraud offences recorded by An Garda Síochána rose by 34.4%; from 5,405 to 7,265 recorded incidents. The report also show that drug offences increased by 16.

Border Loophole For Banned Drivers Closed
A deal to keep disqualified drivers off UK and Irish roads will come into force in February, it has been announced today. Irish drivers disqualified while in the UK will no longer be able to escape their offences when they return to the Irish Republic.

DSA To Put Emergency Stop On Illegal Driving Instructors
The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has revealed they are investigating over 400 cases of illegal driving instructors in Ireland. The department are also urging the general public to put a stop to unqualified driving instructors on our road by checking the instructor's credentials.

Irish Family Seriously Injured In Australia
Three members of the same family are said to be in a serious condition following a road accident in western Australia. Gerard and Marguerite Brosnan, who are from Killarney in Co Kerry, were in Australia visiting two of their daughters who live in Perth. It is understood the vehicle the family was travelling in collided with another car.

TD's Son Jailed For Serious Motoring Offences
The son of Fianna Fail TD Sean Fleming has been put behind bars for almost two years for a number of serious motoring offences. Peter Fleming, 22, was also banned from driving for four years. He admitted charges of dangerous driving, drink-driving, hit and run, driving without insurance, driving without a licence and stealing a car.
