Nurses At St Patrick's Hospital Vote For Industrial Action

Psychiatric nurses at St Patrick's Hospital in Dublin have voted in favour of industrial action.

The dispute is in relation to the unilateral closure of the facility's defined benefit pension scheme.

Strike action will begin on Wednesday, 24 May.

SIPTU the union Organiser, Aideen Carberry, said: "It is regrettable that our members have been left with no option but to take this action. For almost 500 workers to be told that their pension scheme is closed, with no warning or negotiation, is wholly unacceptable.

"What form of industrial action our members will implement is to be determined at the next St Patrick's Mental Health Services group of unions meeting. A complete withdrawal of labour is a possibility.

"As always, our members are very much focused on the needs of the patients that they care for, and their families. The employer now has a three-week window to face up to its responsibilities to its staff, patients and their families."
