Govt's Response To Mother And Baby Home Report 'Disgraceful' - SF

The Government's response to the report of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes has been described as "disgraceful".

Sinn Féin Senator Máire Devine said the terms of reference for the commission must be extended and called on Minister Zappone to come into the Seanad Chamber to answer questions on the matter.

Senator Devine said: "The government's dismissal of the possibility of including children from these homes in the Residential Institutions Redress Scheme an absolute disgrace.

"The failure of the commission to find any evidence of abuse in these homes is incredible.

"Furthermore, to fail to recommend an extension of the terms of reference flies in the face of the evidence given by historians, journalists, and particularly survivors.

"We are only beginning to uncover the harrowing goings on within those institutions, and we cannot close off any part of the story.

"The survivors of these horrific institutions deserve so much more. The terms of reference for the Commission must be extended and I am calling on the Minister Zappone to come into the Seanad Chamber to address this issue."
