Law Reform Commission Call For Review Of Minimum Terms
Murder convictions should continue to carry a mandatory life sentence, with judges allowed to specify a minimum sentence term, the Law Reform Commission has recommended.
The recommendation is amongst a number made in the commission's report on mandatory sentencing, due to be published today (Tuesday).
Alongside advocating judges being allowed to determine a minimum term for murderers, the commission has recommended repealing the established minimum terms for drug offences, saying that those involved in the illegal drugs had adopted their practices to the sentencing standards.
They claim that this has lead to an increase in low-level offenders, such as couriers who hold or transport drugs, being jailed, while those at the top, remain in business.
The full report from the Law Reform Commission will be published later today.

Low Pay Commission Bill To Be Signed Into Law
The Low pay Commission Bill has passed all stages in the House of the Oireachtas and will now be sent to President Michael D Higgins for early signature into law. The new Commission will be tasked with advising the Government on the appropriate rate of the National Minimum Wage and other policy areas related to low pay.

LPC Recommends Increase To National Minimum Wage
The Low Pay Commission (LPC) has recommended a 10 cent increase in the National Minimum Wage, bring the hourly rate to €9.25. The minimum wage was last increased on 01 January, 2016, following a recommendation by the LPC made in July 2015 of a 50 cent increase from €8.65 to €9.15.

Employment Minister Encourages Submissions To LPC
Parties interested in the National Minimum Wage are being encouraged to make submissions to the Low Pay Commission (LPC). Employment Minister Ged Nash is urging interested persons to make their submissions as the LPC begins a new phase of work. The Minister has tasked the independent body to examine two other areas relating to low pay.
