Irish Rail Unions To Ballot Members On Strike Action
Two unions representing drivers of Irish Rail are to ballot members on proposed industrial action following a breakdown in talks.
SIPTU and the NRBU are to hold the vote after management at the transport company are "refusing to engage" in a talks process recommended by the Labour Court.
In a joint statement, SIPTU Organiser, Paul Cullen, and NRBU General Secretary, Dermot O'Leary, said: "It is nothing short of appalling that a semi-state company, tasked with providing a public transport service can flagrantly flout the recognised industrial relations procedures of the State.
"That a taxpayer funded transport service would treat its own workforce in such a disgraceful manner and expose the travelling public to a potential scenario whereby train services will come under threat is contemptible.
"It behoves the shareholder (the State) to instruct management at Irish Rail to operate within recognised industrial relations norms and engage with its own staff on the all-encompassing agenda as set out in a Labour Court commissioned report."
They added: "It should be clearly understood that both unions were, and remain, prepared to immediately discuss the issue of driver training to the point where we could hopefully reach agreement while simultaneously discussing all of the issues contained in the Report.
"Furthermore, we are prepared, as directed by the Labour Court, to refer any outstanding non-agreed issues from the agenda, inclusive of driver training, back to the Court for a final recommendation. We will now immediately move to ballot our members for industrial action in response to the company's point blank refusal to engage around the agenda previously agreed by both parties."

Two Charged Over Cork Assault
Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a businessman at a Cork industrial estate on Tuesday. A man returning to his business at Churchfield Industrial Estate at about 16:45 on Tuesday was approached by two men, who demanded money. Following a struggle, the 30-year-old man was left with serious injuries.

SIPTU Back Industrial Action At Iarnród Éireann
SIPTU members at Iarnród Éireann have voted in favour of industrial action, should the company move to enforce cost reduction measures and pay cuts. It is understood that the union members, some 2,000 staff, backed industrial action by 2 to 1, however rejected a full strike by the same margin.

Further Luas Strikes Announced
Luas drivers belonging to SIPTU have voted in favour of further strike action. The members have said they plan to strike on Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. The industrial action is in response to a dispute over plans to introduce rosters for a 10-minute service by Irish Rail.

Dublin Bus Strike Suspended As Talks Begin
Industrial action by drivers and other staff at Dublin Bus has been suspended after three days, with a full bus service back in operation today. Unions and Dublin Bus management are now reported to be engaging in talks at the Labour Court in an effort to secure a solution.
