Irish Rail Records 89 Level Crossing Incidents In 2015

A total of 89 incidents involving the misuse of level crossings were recorded by Irish Rail in 2015.

Out of the 'near miss' events, 61 involved vehicles and five involved pedestrians. In addition, 20 incidents were classified as Category 1, meaning the driver had to apply the emergency break.

To mark International Level Crossing Awareness Day, the Road Safety Authority (RSA), the Commission for Railway Regulation (CRR) and Irish Rail have launched an informational video promoting safety awareness at level crossing.

With 149 unattended level crossing across the country, Irish Rail said the informational video will advise road-users how to use this type of level crossing safely.

The company added: "Road-users are reminded that they are solely responsible for opening the gates before crossing the tracks and ensuring the gates are securely shut again once they have crossed to the other side. Failure to shut the gates could have serious consequences for another road-user."
