Driver Escapes Injury In Train Crash At Level Crossing

Both Iarnród Éireann and the Rail Accident Investigation Unit are investigating a collision between a train and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

The crash happened on a level crossing near Birdhill, Co Tipperary, with both the woman driving the car and eight rail passengers suffering just minor cuts and bruises.

People using the level crossing must open the gates themselves and check that the line is clear.

Once across they then must go back and close the gates again.

One theory being investigated is that the woman had driven through the crossing without being aware that another motorist had left the gates open.
