Road Deaths Decrease By 15% In 2015 - RSA
The number of deaths on Irish roads fell by 15% in 2015, it has been revealed.
According to figures from the Road Safety Authority (RSA), there were 158 fatal collisions across the year, resulting in 165 fatalities.
However, there were 21 fewer fatal collisions and 28 fewer deaths when compared with 2014.
The drop goes against the rising trend of road deaths, with 188 fatalities in 2013 and 193 in 2014.
The lowest recorded year for Irish road deaths was 162 in 2012.
Commenting on the data, Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe TD said: "While every death on our roads is one death too many, I sincerely hope that 2015 is a return to the steady progress we were making as a country, up to 2012, to make our roads safer for everybody.
"A reduction of 15% in the number of fatalities is a positive development but the number of lives tragically lost, especially in recent weeks, reminds us that we must continue to focus on the most effective ways of reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads."

Work-Related Deaths Gravely Underestimated
One of Ireland's largest trade unions has said that the actual number of work-related deaths in Ireland is more than 23 times the official figure. According to Siptu, 1,400 people died every year as a result of accidents, illnesses and diseases linked to their employment, as opposed to official statistics of around 60.

57% Fall In Road Deaths In 5-Year Period
2007 and 2011 saw a drop of 57% in the number of people killed on Irish roads, according to a report by the Road Safety Authority. The report also shows that two counties, Laois and Leitrim, achieved a 100% reduction in road deaths, recording no fatalities last year. Only one county, Cavan, recorded an increase in fatalities over the period.

Workplace Fatalities Down 13%
Workplace deaths fell by 13% in 2012, according to figures released by the Health and Safety Authority. The number of people killed in the workplace fell from 54 in 2011 to 47 last year. The agriculture sector recorded the highest number of deaths for the third year in succession with some 21 fatalities, one less than in 2011.

'N' Plate For New Drivers Comes Into Force Today
The new Novice plate for new drivers is to come into force today. New drivers will replace their 'L' plates with the new 'N' plates, which they will have to display for two years. Under the new law that brings in the 'N' plate, the number of penalty points before disqualification has been reduced to seven.
