Work-Related Deaths Gravely Underestimated
One of Ireland's largest trade unions has said that the actual number of work-related deaths in Ireland is more than 23 times the official figure.
According to Siptu, 1,400 people died every year as a result of accidents, illnesses and diseases linked to their employment, as opposed to official statistics of around 60.
Siptu claims the discrepancy is due to a policy by the authorities to only record deaths caused by accidents on the grounds of the workplace as work-related.
However, Sylvester Cronin, Siptu's health and safety adviser, called on the Government to revaluate the current system, and recognise all workers whose deaths were caused by their employment.
“It is high time the Government counted all the work-related deaths and acted accordingly,” he said.
Mr Cronin said the figure of 1,400 work-related deaths came from statistics compiled by the United Nations agency, the International Labour Organisation.
“Ireland’s official statistics count only those workers killed as a result of an accident inside the workplace,” he said.
“They omit to count deaths caused by work-related illnesses and diseases. They also exclude work-related deaths caused by road traffic accidents.”

A 9% decrease in the number of births registered has been recorded for the first quarter of 2013, in comparison to the same period in 2012. New figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show 17,563 births were registered in the period, averaging an annual birth rate of 15.3 per 1,000 of the population.

Irish Population Leaps Ahead Of UK
While Northern Ireland's population has now exceeded 1.75 million and is growing faster than any other UK region - it is dwarfed by the rate of increase in the Irish Republic. Official statistics just revealed today show that in mid 2007, the number of people living in the North had increased by 1.0% over the previous year.

Birth Rate Up In First 3 Months Of 2008
There was almost a 10% jump in the number of babies born in Ireland during the first three months of this year, compared to 2007. Figures released by the Central Statistics Office report 19,000 births during January, February and March.

No Jail After 'Inattention' Caused Friends Deaths In Crash
A Donegal woman has walked free from court after escaping jail for dangerous driving causing the deaths of her two friends. Louise Cantwell, a 24-year-old beautician from Carndonagh, Co Donegal, was found guilty of the driving offence which led to the deaths of Alice Mullen and Kelly Doherty, who were both in their early 20s.
