Teenager Swept Into Sea In Wexford

A teenager has suffered critical injuries after being swept into the sea off the Wexford coast during Storm Desmond.

The girl, who is aged 15, was one of four young people swept into the sea on Sunday afternoon.

It is understood they were part of a Dublin-based scout group at Hook Head, Co Wexford, when a large wave swept them off rocks and into the water.

Two managed to swim to shore, but the girl and a boy, also thought to be 15, had to be rescued by an Irish Coast Guard helicopter. They have been taken to hospital.

Speaking to RTÉ, Chris Reynolds, Coast Guard director, said the girl was unconscious when she was removed from the water. The boy is thought to have tried to keep her afloat. He was in a distressed condition when he was rescued, and suffering from mild hypothermia.
