Psychiatric Services In Galway In Crisis - Ó Clochartaigh
Psychiatric services in University Hospital Galway are in "absolute crisis" following cutbacks across the region, according to Sinn Féin Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
The Galway West–South Mayo Senator said there are very serious health and safety issues in the unit which must be addressed immediately.
He said: "The unit was completely understaffed at the weekend and the managers responsible for rectifying the situation were nowhere to be found.
"I am told that despite a new purpose built unit lying empty that staff and patients are being asked to use a unit which is simply not fit for purpose.
"I believe people close to the service are being gagged about speaking out but they tell me that lives are in danger here. We shouldn't need another tragedy in relation to this unit for the hospital group and the government to live up to their commitments."
