Thomas Kent State Funeral Held In Cork

Thomas Kent, one of 16 men executed in the aftermath of the 1916 Rising, is to be given a State Funeral today in Cork.

Born in Bawnard House, Castlelyons, near Fermoy, Co. Cork in 1865, Thomas and his brother William Kent were arrested following a RIC raid at the family home on 01 May, 1916. Another brother, Richard, was wounded trying to escape and died shortly after. Thomas and William were tried by courts-martial at Cork Detention Barracks. William was acquitted, but Thomas was sentenced to death and was executed in Cork on 9 May 1916. He was buried in Cork Prison, where his remains were exhumed in June.

Mr Kent's remains will leave Collins Barracks at 12pm on Friday with full military accompaniment to Cork Prison for the formal Removal Service.

The re-interment will feature the key elements of a State Funeral including a Military Firing Party rendering honours, the Last Post, the Reveille, and the National Anthem.

Music will be provided by the Cork Prison Officers Male Voice Choir and the Army Band and the Taoiseach will deliver the Graveside Oration.
