Rape Crisis Network Funding Cuts 'Short-Sighted'

Cuts to the funding of the Rape Crisis Network Ireland (RCNI) have been described as "short-sighted", which undermines the Government's commitment to tackling sexual violence in Ireland.

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson for Justice and Equality, Niall Collins, made the comments after a meeting with RCNI director, Clíona Saidléar.

"The announcement from Tusla that all funding will now be withdrawn from the RCNI goes directly against stated Government policy of addressing sexual violence," Deputy Collins said.

"The failure to consult with the RCNI in advance of the withdrawal of funding shows a very cowardly approach being taken by Tusla and the Government. They have continually dragged their feet on introducing new legislation to curb sexual abuse and violence. The Sexual Offences Bill has yet to be introduced into the Oireachtas. They have failed to sign and ratify the Istanbul Convention which commits the state to tackling violence against women. One must question the Government’s commitment in this area, because so far the approach has been dismal.

"I am calling on the Minister for Justice and Equality to consult with the Minister for Children and Tusla and review this funding decision. I believe that on examination the Government will realise how misguided this decision is."
