President Higgins To Lead Commemoration Event In Cobh
President Michael D Higgins is to lead a commemoration event in Cobh on Thursday 7 May to mark the centenary of the sinking of the Lusitania.
The event will also be attended by the British, German and US ambassadors.
Road closures will be in effect in Casement Square and on part of Westbourne Place from 11.30am until 10.30pm.
Captain Michael McCarthy, Commercial Manager of the Port of Cork and who is lead organiser of the event, said: "We expect that up to 10,000 people from across Ireland and beyond, many of whom have personal connections to the Lusitania disaster, will descend on the town of Cobh to remember all those who lost their lives on the 7th May 1915.
"For anyone intending on travelling to the event, I would urge them to take the train as it is the easiest and most direct way to get to the heart of Cobh town where events will be taking place."
Superintendent John Quilter said: "Additional Gardaí will be in place for the day and will be aided by event stewards to ensure that everyone who attends has an enjoyable and safe experience. I would encourage all those travelling to Cobh to plan their travel in advance and to check for updates in relation to parking and traffic restrictions."

Longford Road Death Probed
Gardaí at Longford town are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision which occurred at Bornacoola, Carrick On Shannon, Co Leitrim at approximately 8.21am this morning. A 36-year-old man - who was the only occupant of the 4 X 4 vehicle - was fatally injured as a result of this collision.

Dublin Cleans Up Its Act
A survey on Dublin's litter has found cleanliness in the city has improved noticeably, and, along with almost 60% of Irish towns, it is deemed 'clean' to European levels. The survey results show a marked improvement over recent years, with Dublin now ranked 16th place out of the 55 areas surveyed.

A special Ireland 2016 event is to be held today (Tuesday) at Royal Hospital Kilmainham to highlight the role of women in the events of 1916. The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, will welcome women from across all sectors of Irish society to the event celebrating International Women's Day.
