Gardaí Raise Concerns Over Private Licences While On Duty

Gardaí supervisors have called for patrol cars to exempt from penalty points.

It is understood that gardaí have raised concerns that they will collect points on their private licences for traffic offences committed while on duty.

Currently, gardaí are meant to be exempt from sanctions "in special circumstances", such as speeding while on duty. However, following previous controversy surrounding officers and penalty points.

The issue to be discussed this week at the annual Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, being held in Trim, Co Meath.

Over 660 Motorists Found Speeding Over Easter Bank Holidays
More than 660 motorists were caught breaking the speed limit across the Causeway Coast and Glens during the Easter bank holiday weekend – an increase of 22% from 2022. Chief Inspector Sinead McIldowney said: "The Safety Camera Vans were deployed at various locations across the North Coast and the increase in these detections is a worrying trend.

No Evidence Found In Penalty Points Investigation
No evidence has been found that garda quashed penalty points from drivers’ licenses, following an investigation and report was produced for the government. The investigation did find that some gardaí were too “liberal” in complying with requests to terminate points and did not follow procedures when doing so. Some may face disciplinary action.

Minister For Justice To Deliver Penalty Points Report
The Minister for Justice is due to deliver his report on the Gardaí administration of penalty points. It is understood that Alan Shatters report to the Cabinet will contain a number of recommendations, some of which will require legislation. The report follows allegations made in 2012 by a garda whistleblower over the processing of penalty points.

Flanagan Admits Having Penalty Points Cancelled
The Dáil has heard an admission from Independent TD Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan that penalties point he was to receive for driving offence were cancelled, on two separate occasions. In both incidents, Flanagan was stopped by garda for using a mobile phone while driving.

Learner Drivers Could Face Penalty Points
New penalty point offences are to take effect from today (8 December), the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe TD, has confirmed. Under the new legislation, penalty points will include for a number of road offenses, while a further 14 offences will bring penalty points for the first time.
