Change To Irish Abortion Law Rejected

A proposed change to Ireland's abortion law has been rejected by the government.

The change, if approved, would have legalised terminations in fatal foetal abnormality cases.

The bill, which had been proposed by Clare Daly TD, was defeated by 104 votes to 20. She said it was "inhumane" that women carrying a child with a fatal foetal abnormality had to travel to England for an abortion.

Fatal foetal abnormality is where a child in the womb has been diagnosed with a condition which will result in it dying either in the womb or shortly after birth.

According to the BBC, Taoiseach Enda Kenny told the Dáil that Cabinet members had received formal legal advice ahead of the vote, where the attorney general said the bill was unconstitutional. The advice would mean a referendum would be needed in order to introduce the proposed changes.
