HSA And Garda Launch Investigation Into Farm Death

Gardaí and the Health and Safety Authority have launched separate investigations into the death of a man on a farm in Co Kilkenny.

According to garda a man, aged in his 60s, died after a tractor rolled back on him on a farm near Bennettsbridge.

Other reports suggest the man is from a "well-known family in Kilkenny", with "strong sporting connections".

Five Arrested Over Donegal Arson Attacks
Gardaí investigating a series of fires in the Buncrana area have arrested five males. Officers have been investigating eleven fires in the area since early July. They said that the attacks were random, with some occurring in isolated rural areas, and the properties targeted included unoccupied buildings, farm sheds, vehicles and a health centre.

A new campaign to tackle farm crime and thefts has been launched. Since 2010, over 28,642 farm related crime incidents have been reported to Garda, including burglaries and vehicle, machinery and equipment theft, according to the latest CSO figures.

Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney, has launched a new National Farm Safety initiative, in an effort to tackle increasing farm deaths in Ireland. To date twenty people have died in farm related accidents this year, compared to sixteen for the whole of 2013.
