Budget 2015 Pledges €2.2bn For Social Housing

The Government has pledged to increase the supply of social housing in Budget 2015.

Some 90,000 people are currently waiting for social housing and lack of available units is the main problem.

Labour Senator Aideen Hayden, currently Chairperson of Threshold, the National Housing Organisation, said: "The Department project 7,500 the completion of new units in 2015. This is a 500% increase in the amount of units built last year and shows this Government's recognition that housing is one of the biggest issues facing this country.

"I look forward to Minister Alan Kelly's strategy on Social Housing, to be announced shortly. However today's budget announcements signal a very strong commitment to a robust social housing programme and innovative solutions to deal with the crisis."
