Fingal County Council Back Dublin Mayor Proposal

Fingal County Council has overturned a previous decision not to back a proposal that would make way for a directly-elected Dublin mayor.

The council has now decided that Dublin residents should be consulted on the proposal.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael Senator, Catherine Noone, said: "Now that all four Councils, and more than 75% of Councillors, have voted in favour of this, I believe it is time for the new Minister for the Environment, Alan Kelly TD, to review this situation and to put plans in place for a plebiscite among the residents of Dublin.

"It is clear from recent planning decisions that the role of a directly-elected, accountable Mayor of Dublin is now more important than ever before. I believe that this would have helped us avoid recent problems around concert planning.

"A mayor would have a hugely positive impact on our city. In a world where cities now compete directly for resources and investment, the notion of a Dublin mayor with real power and influence is a very positive one."
