Arthur's Day Cancelled

International drinks company Diageo have announced that Arthur's Day, the annual advertising event that marked the anniversary of Arthur Guiness, will not take place this year.

The yearly event had attracted criticism, with opponents saying that despite how the event was marketed it was did little more than encourage people to drink excessively.

Last year ambulance call outs tripled on the day, according to Alcohol Action Ireland.

Welcoming the news, Fine Gael's Catherine Noone said: "Arthur’s Day was developing a bad reputation, with some treating it as yet another excuse to drink excessively. This was never the original intention, so I am glad that Diageo has decided to not go ahead with it again this year.

The event has been replaced with a new Guinness sponsored music event, Guinness Amplify – a series of battle of the bands type events taking place throughout September and October.
