Call For Senators To Resign From Banking Inquiry

Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has called on Senator Susan O'Keeffe and Senator Michael D'Arcy to resign from the banking inquiry.

Deputy Doherty said: "The recent controversies surrounding the membership of the banking inquiry have caused significant damage to the prospect of it enjoying the full confidence of the Irish public.

"Today, in light of this, I wrote to both Senator O'Keeffe and Senator D'Arcy asking them to resign their positions to help restore public confidence in the work of the inquiry.

"The most important challenge facing the Oireachtas members nominated to the inquiry is ensuring it is an inquiry which, is viewed by the public as worthwhile, fair and impartial. The unfortunate comments by An Taoiseach last week means the nomination of Senator O’Keeffe and Senator D’Arcy has become associated with the government insisting on its way for the proceedings.

"The work of the banking inquiry has already been undermined and it is important for this to be rectified.

"There is a great desire among the Irish people for a proper inquiry into the role of developers, banks, politicians and others in the banking collapse and aftermath which, has so damaged our country and society.

"I urged Senator O'Keeffe and Senator D'Arcy to do the right thing and to step down with immediate effect.

"I believe that this is the only means by which the public can see that their concerns are being addressed."
