Man Dies In Hijacked Taxi Crash

A 23-year-old father-of-one has been killed when the stolen taxi he was in, crashed in Dublin's south inner city.

According to reports, two men hijacked a taxi at about 08:30 on Sunday morning. The men then drove the car at speed through inner city streets before colliding with a pole in the James's Street area.

Garda say that the 23-year-old, understood to be the passenger in the car, was thrown some 30 ft from the vehicle in the impact. It is believed that he was not wearing a seat belt. He was taken to St James's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time after arriving.

The driver of the stolen car escaped uninjured and has been arrested in connection with the hijacking.

The taxi driver, who was assaulted before his car was stolen, also required hospital treatment. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

Three Released Over Dublin Garda Shooting
Three people arrested in connection with the shooting of a garda in Dublin in September have been released without charge. Paul Sherlock was shot and injured on September 25 after he stopped a stolen car on Ossary Road in North Strand. A man and a woman, both aged 29, were arrested in Clondalkin on Sunday night.
