Double Blow For Taxi Drivers For Change Campaign

Despite recently well attended protests, pressure group Taxi Drivers For Change have been dealt a double blow with the publication of a damning report, and the passing of their organisation's chairman.

In a first wave of bad news for the taxi driver group, which has been campaigning for restrictions on newly granted licences, a newly review published has claimed the current situation is the "most appropriate model."

In stark contrast to drivers' calls for restrictions, the report from the Goodbody Economic Consultants said more licences should be granted, and added that there was evidence that demand exceeded supply.

The report said reforms to the industry should be fast-tracked, with more vehicles made available to the disabled.

The report, Economic Review of the Small Public Service Vehicle Industry, said the industry was worth €1.5bn in 2008 and that demand for services peaked on Friday and Saturday when 73% of trips were made.

The report was slammed by Taxi Drivers for Change, which held its sixth protest in recent weeks yesterday outside the office of Taxi Regulator Kathleen Doyle.

In a second blow to The Taxi Driver's For Change this week however, the group's website has announced its chairman, David Meade passed away on Monday.

A spokesman for the group said: "The committee and supporters of Taxi Drivers For Change would like to extend their sympathy to the family of David Meade, Our chairman who passed away on Monday.

All protests are cancelled this week and will resume next week."
