Harkin Takes Last Midlands-North-West Seat

Independent candidate Marian Harkin has been elected to the European Parliament.

Ms Harkin took the fourth and last seat in the Midlands-North-West constituency after a recheck of ballot papers, which ended in the early hours of this morning.

The final result was announced nearly five days after proceedings began in Castlebar.

She had been contesting with Fianna Fáil's Pat Gallagher, but a 275-vote gap proved too substantial and the Donegal MEP conceded at about 04:00 this morning.

Ms Harkin joins Independent Luke Ming Flanagan, Mairead McGuinness of Fine Gael and Sinn Féin's Matt Carthy as the Midlands-North-West representatives in the new European Parliament.

Eleven MEP seats across three constituencies have now been filled.
