Shatter To Accept And Donate Severance Payment

Former Minister for Justice Alan Shatter is to accept his severance payment of €70,000, but will donate it to the Jack & Jill Foundation.

It is understood that Mr Shatter has said that he felt it would "appropriate to mark the fact that ministerial severance payments are no longer payable."

Speaking to journalists, Mr Shatter said he was surprised to find out he was still entitled to receive the severance payment.

Legislation abolishing such payments has previously been passed, however, reports suggest the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin had not signed the ministerial order bringing the legislation into force.
