Shatter Severance Move Highlights Seriousness Of Medical Card Crisis - FF
Alan Shatter's decision to donate his severance payment to the Jack & Jill Foundation has been described as "a belated recognition of the distress caused by his Government’s medical card cuts."
Fianna Fáil's Justice Spokesperson Niall Collins said: "There’s a strong irony in Mr Shatter’s decision to defy his party colleagues, keep his severance payment and gift the money to the very charity that’s led the campaign against his Government's medical card cuts.
"The Jack & Jill Foundation does fantastic work with young children with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. The charity has led the campaigning against the Government’s incredibly cruel cuts to discretionary medical cards for children with life-limiting conditions. It is extremely deserving of all the support it can get.
"People will find it interesting that Alan Shatter chose this very charity for today’s announcement. It comes after his party colleagues Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Health Minister James Reilly spent two years dismissing the distress caused to children that Jack & Jill represents."

Fianna Fáil general election candidate for Kildare North, Frank O'Rourke, said that the government has overseen a five-hold increase in prescription charges despite promising to abolish them altogether four years ago.

No Medical Coverage For Quarter Of Irish Adults
More than 25% of Irish adults do not have a medical card, or private health insurance, the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office have revealed. According to the CSO, only 44% of those who responded to the latest Quarterly National Household Survey, said that they had private insurance, while 24% said they had a medical card.
