Beaumont Hospital Campus Opens New Psychiatric Unit

A new purpose built inpatient psychiatric unit has opened on the Beaumont Hospital Campus.

The new North Dublin Mental Health Services (NDMHS) unit replaces the acute inpatient unit formerly located in St Ita's Portrane, which was located on a temporary basis since 2011 in the Joyce Rooms St Vincents Fairview and Hawthorn Unit Connolly Hospital pending the completion of this new unit.

This new facility will serve a population of approximately 250,000 people in the North Dublin area.

The Joyce Unit, a general adult psychiatric admissions unit, on the ground floor comprises 38 single ensuite rooms. The Sheehan Unit, also on the ground floor, is a separate unit dedicated, to psychiatry of old age with 6 single ensuite rooms.

The new centre also has an extensive activities area including an Art room, project room, sensory room, conference room and 4 courtyard gardens. This uniquely designed mental health facility will provide a safe and therapeutic environment to facilitate service users journey to recovery.

Safety Of Roscommon Psychiatric Unit Questioned
Questions have been raised about staffing levels at Roscommon County Hospital following the death of a 38-year-old patient of the hospitals psychiatric unit. Following a number of assaults on staff in the past three weeks, the Psychiatric Nurses Association has described the unit as unsafe.
