Investigation Launches Into Third Baby Death At Maternity Ward

A new investigation has begun into the death of a baby at the maternity unit in Cavan hospital on Wednesday morning.

It is the third baby to die in the last 18 months at the busy maternity unit, with a baby boy dying at the unit last month.

An investigation into last months death is currently underway, while a report into a death some 18 months ago is understood to have not yet been made available to the family.

A statement released by the Health Service Executive confirmed the death yesterday morning, adding that the hospital "will give the family every assistance and support required. As is normal practice, a full review of the circumstances surrounding the death will be carried out."
