ASTI Issue Strike Action Directive To Members

The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) has issued a directive to its members following an overwhelming vote in favour of industrial action.

The dispute is over planned changes to the Junior Cert programme, with ASTI's members voting 9:1 in favour of action.

The directive instructs members to:

• Not to attend CPD organised in connection with the Junior Cycle Framework Proposals.

• Not to attend meetings associated with the Junior Cycle Framework Proposals.

• Not to attend any planning meeting or participate in any planning activities organised in connection with the Junior Cycle Framework Proposals.

• Not to engage in any aspect of school based assessment for the purpose of the Junior Cycle Student Award (JCSA).

• Not to engage in any development of or delivery of Junior Cycle Framework

• Not to engage in any event or function related to points 1 to 5 above.

ASTI Vote In Favour Of Strike Action
The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) have voted in favour of industrial action. The teachers have concerns regarding the proposed changes to the Junior Cycle programme on secondary schools. It is understood that turnout for the vote was 45%, with 88% voting in favour of, as yet undetermined, industrial action.

Teachers Follow Through On Strike Action
Up to 30,000 teachers are today taking strike action in an ongoing dispute over changes to the Junior Cycle. The teachers are opposed to proposed changes that would see them responsible for assessing 40% of a students final Junior Certificate. They claim the move would damage the relationship between teachers and students.

Five Junior Minister Posts To Be Scrapped
It has emerged that five junior minister posts are to be scrapped by Brian Cowen later this month. According to reports today, Mr Cowen held a half-hour meeting with all 20 junior Ministers on Monday morning where he asked all the junior ministers to resign on April 21st.
